Channing Church is a vibrant, creative and thriving congregation located in the heart of Rockland Center. We are one of the few 135 year old “start-ups” within the Unitarian Universalist community in Massachusetts. As a Welcoming Congregation, we take pride in offering a place to BE TRUE TO YOURSELF, while providing an open environment to worship, celebrate and share in the UU spirit of religious freedom with others...just like you!

  • Plan and implement fundraising activities for RE program

  • Prepare articles for the parish newsletter to inform the congregation of various RE events
  • Oversee preparation and maintenance of classrooms, hallways and supplies
  • Select with committee the content of the Holiday presentation, Children’s Sunday Celebrations, and other Intergenerational Services. Oversee preparation and coordinate presentation of these services

  • To be present and available in the church a half hour prior to classes on Sundays and to be on hand for any other matters that may arise
  • To attend Coffee Hour, whenever possible, in order to be accessible and available to address questions and comments from parents and other members

After many meetings, much reading and significant discussion we have found our new Sunday Preacher!

Please join us in welcoming Gwendolyn Howard, D.Min, MSW, LICSW to Channing Church!

Gwendolyn Howard is from Providence, Rhode Island– originally from the midwest.

She is currently employed as a therapist, an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales, and Community Minister at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Providence.

She has taught philosophy, psychology, world religions, and ethics on the college level, is a clinical social worker, providing therapy and guidance for individuals, families and groups.

Her sermons are compelling, heartwarming and smart. She will cause us to think and feel, deeply!

In her spare time, she likes to read, likes all kinds of music except pop country, enjoys exploring microbreweries, and watches obscure independent films. She also has a great sense of humor – she wrote: “I play the tuba, and a sense of humor is mandatory for such an instrument”.

  • Channing Church Affirmation

    Love is the doctrine of this church
    The quest for truth is its sacrament
    And service is its prayer.
    To dwell together in peace;
    To seek knowledge in Freedom;
    To serve humanity in fellowship;
    To the end that all souls shall grow
    Into harmony with the divine.
    Thus do we covenant with each other
    And with God.
